Before re-locating to Cooma in late 2019 for family reasons, Peter’s main working role was General Counsel of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in Far North Queensland. AIMS is an independent statutory authority of the Australian Government and is our premier marine science research agency ranked second in the world. Peter’s commenced work at AIMS in early 2009 and his roles included Manager of Corporate Services and Privacy, FOI and PID Officer. His duties focussed on corporate management and government policy as well as preparing complex contracts and legal advice in relation to intellectual property, commercial property, construction law, vessel charters, research collaborations, IT and consultancy service agreements. In the  lead-up to these roles Peter had a long career in the private sector which included senior commercial partner with Ashurst and corporate counsel at Westfield as well as in-house Counsel and General Manager of an SME in Cairns with 130 FTE’s. Peter also worked in senior legal and policy roles at the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications in Canberra. Since moving to Cooma he has taken up multiple community-based roles in the NFP sector as an office bearer, including director and chairperson at the Sir William Hudson Nursing Home (now Hudson House), Monaro Rail Trail Inc., Cooma Cycling Club Inc., Rails Trails Australia Inc. and Hydro 1 Heritage Centre Inc. He continues to be engaged locally having taken a Community Development Planner fill-in role in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s Strategic Planning Department in 2023/24 and in late 2024 as a senior legal director with the National Disability Insurance Agency.
