Ian is a retired civil engineer with over 40 years’ experience and an almost career long association with the SMEC Fluid Mechanics Laboratory. Ian’s specialisation in civil engineering hydraulics and water resources commenced with 8 years (1973-80) as a project engineer in the SMEC Fluid Mechanics Lab, responsible for hydraulic model and field hydraulics studies. Ian was a SMEC officer from 1971-80 and 1983-2003 and worked as a private consultant in water resources engineering from 2003-2013. Major and interesting projects that Ian managed and lead included the South Java Flood Mitigation Project (Indonesia) 1996-7, the Semarang Flood Mitigation Project (Indonesia) 1999-2000, design of Cooma Flood Mitigation works 1999, Flood Mitigation and Catchment Management for Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) 2001-2, installation and upgrade of upper Murrumbidgee River (upstream of the ACT) stream gauging stations 2011-12, also investigation of Cloud Seeding for the ACT 2012-13. Ian’s last work association with the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory was as the Clients representative for the Dartmouth Dam Spillway Hydraulic Model Study 2009-10. Ian joined the then SMEC Technical Centre Working Group in 2017 and has served as secretary and president of this group and the succeeding Hydro1 Heritage Centre Working Group and Hydro1 Heritage Centre Inc. Other community involvements include Cooma Lions Club (20 years), and Cooma Cycling Club (9 years). Ian resides in Cooma.
